Eggs Nutrition


Is it safe to keep eggs at room temperature?
Eggs shouldn't be kept at room temperature.  Food scientists estimate for every hour at room temperature, eggs age one day compared to refrigerated eggs.  The egg's nutrition is optimal when kept refrigerated and used before the expiration date.




How many grams of protein is in one large egg?

A single large egg has 6 grams of protein.


Are eggs a source of vitamin D?
                                                                     Yes, eggs contain around Eggs 41 IU of vitamin D.

Should I avoid eating eggs since they are high in cholesterol?
For many decades people were warned about eating too many eggs because of their cholesterol content.  However, research has shown no difference in the cholesterol levels of people who have a high egg consumption diet compared to those who almost never eat eggs.  Avoiding eggs because of cholesterol has become somewhat of a myth.


Are eggs high in saturated fats?
Eggs are not high in saturated fats, most of the fats in eggs are of the unsaturated variety similar to vegetable fats.

Nutrition difference between white eggs and brown eggs?
There is No difference in the nutrition value provided by these different colored eggs.  The color is determined by what breed of hen laid the egg.  The color of the hen determines the color of the egg, white hens lay white eggs, brown hens lay brown eggs.  In the USA, the dominant breed of hens is named the, Single Comb White Leghorn.  This breed of hens is white, the majority of eggs in the USA are white because of this breed.

Sometimes, I see a blood spot in my egg.  Does this means the egg has been fertilized?

No this does not mean the egg has been fertilized, this just means a blood vessel has broke.  These eggs are safe to eat, if it makes you feel better just pick the blood spot out with a spoon.

Can hens produce several eggs in a day?

I can't say that a hen has never produced more than one egg in a day but...  Typically it takes 24-26 hours for a hen to produce an egg.

Are eggs the result of sexual reproduction between hens and roosters?

No.  Eggs are the result of the hens ovulation cycle.  Just as human women produce eggs.
